Ezekiel 1

1. Now, pass that in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, fifth day of the month, as he was among the captives by the river Cheb, that the heavens opened and I saw visions of God.

2. On the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of King Jehoiachin

3. The word the Lord came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Cobar, and the hand of the Lord was there with him.

Ezekiel (which means "God will strengthen" or "the power of God"), the priest, the son of Buzi, was captured and taken to Babylon during the second incursion of King Nebuchadnezzar on Jerusalem, about 597 BC, and the young King Jehoiachin (also called Jeconiah (Jeremiah 24:1, 27:20) and (Coniah 22:24; 37:1)) and thirteen thousand of the finest citizens of Jerusalem (2 Kings 24:12-16, Jer. 52:28).

Ezekiel was from a priestly family and was a priest and a prophet to the Jewish hostages in Babylon (the land of the Chaldeans). There was a house in Tel-Abib Bible (Easton's Dictionary), near Nippur (Ryrie Study Bible p. 1138), along the river Chebar. He had a wife, who died suddenly in BC 587 (Ezek.24 :16-18). He prophesied for 22or 23 years, overlapping preaching and prophecies of Daniel, Jeremiah, and probably Obadiah.

The prophecy of Ezekiel speaks of the sins of Judah, as a nation and individual, the sins of many other nations, and the sins of this world. Maintain hope, in the prophecies of divine redemption for all who trust in God and obey His commandments. Often refers to the Pentateuch, and is often referred to in the book of Revelation.

Ezekiel died in captivity, and is said to be buried in Baghdad, Iraq.
His tomb is said to be in a neighborhood called Keffil Bible (Easton's Dictionary).
